Car door won’t close – causes and fix

If the car door no longer closes, this can be due to both the mechanics and the electronics. In this article we will show you how to find out and close the car door again.

Especially in winter, it is more common in older cars that the car doors no longer close properly. Moisture penetrates between the window and the door and freezes the mechanism for closing the door.

Try shaking the door handle both inside and out. Also pull the handle a few times in quick succession. This should allow the cable to grip the door again.

How to fix it

  • If the problem cannot be solved from the outside, you must remove the door panel. All you need is a screwdriver.
  • Check all moving parts and cables inside the door that are responsible for closing them. With a little WD-40 you can lubricate all parts.
  • If the car is not yours or is still under warranty, you should not remove the panel yourself. As a layperson, you can quickly cause small dents. In this case, it is better to give your car to a specialist.
  • If a door no longer closes via the central locking system, the problem may also be with the electronics. In these cases, the repair is usually much more expensive.
