Have a quick question about a new battery for my 120d.

My previous battery 12V 80Ah 800A has to be replaced.

Had an original BMW AGM battery from Banner with 12V 90Ah 900A.

My question to you, does anyone have experience with replacing a more powerful battery? Are there any problems? The battery will of course be reinitialized as prescribed !!!

An AGM battery and also a 90 AH (if an 80AH battery was previously installed) must be coded, in addition to registering!

An AGM battery is great, has better cold current behavior and is standard on vehicles with auxiliary heating!

Thanks for the answer, but I didn't put the battery in - either I was too stupid or it really doesn't work ...!

My previous battery was the 80 A AMG battery, but it has the dimensions 315 X 175 X 190 ...

The new one has the dimensions 353 X 175 X 190 ... The mounting base is the same and I read that it should also fit in my 120D! Does anyone have experience with it?

I also installed the larger battery in me. Was also skeptical about the installation. With the smaller battery, a mounting plate is screwed down at the base. With the large one, this mounting plate is completely omitted. You have to push the battery into the compartment. But it quickly becomes clear if you want to install them yourself. The mounting plate is omitted because the battery goes in so tight that it has no chance at all to get out. And there is no space left for the plate.

And importantly, what the previous speakers have said, the battery has to be encoded. Otherwise problems can quickly arise. It is not loaded correctly e.g.

I was told by BMW last year that even with small deviations in the nominal capacity (e.g. 74Ah instead of 70Ah), recoding is required!

A completely identical battery as before only has to be entered in the system so that the electronics know that a new battery is installed.

This is very important, otherwise it will be loaded incorrectly!

Battery replacement !!!

From E60 / E87 (introduced in 2004), all BMW vehicles have an IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor).

If you replace the battery (same capacity), it must be registered by a tester.

If this does not happen, the IBS and the power management work with the values of the old battery and there may be a reduction or shutdown of individual consumers.

This affects: All vehicles after the E60 such as: E87 1 series, E90 3 series, etc.

Except: E46 3 series, E83 X3, E85 Z4 (on-board electronics both based on the E46, therefore no IBS)

Imagine it like this:

You have a new battery and it was not registered. The state of charge of the old battery is still saved. This was completely over.

Now you get into your car in the morning at -10 degrees. Seat heating on level 3, rear window heating, etc. You have been driving for 20 minutes and you wonder why the rear window does not become free and the seat is not warm even though the LEDs light up ... well. This comes from not registering the battery.

I also carry out this registration as well as teaching and adapting larger capacities, which is very important since otherwise the alternator will not supply enough voltage.
