Regularly checking the oil level and changing the oil in good time are important for a long engine life. In addition, the oil change is no longer a big problem today, so you can do it yourself quickly and save money.
The different engine oils
When you should change your oil depends, among other things, on the kilometers driven. In the manual of your car you will find a corresponding recommendation especially for your vehicle. As a rule of thumb, you should change the oil every 12 to 18 months – and this also applies if you have only covered a few kilometers by car. When choosing a new motor oil, you should also consult your car’s manual before buying the oil.
In general, the multi-grade oil is often used, which you can use both in summer and in winter. In addition, the multi-grade oil is relatively inexpensive at around 15 euros.
The synthetic oil, however, is usually significantly more expensive than the multi-grade oil. This oil is particularly worthwhile if you cover short distances by car more frequently in winter, since its special properties significantly improve cold start behavior.
The long-life motor oils are relatively innovative – you usually have to dig deeper if you choose this oil. The main advantage of long-life oil is that you can significantly extend the intervals between oil changes.
You should also use a new oil filter that matches your car whenever you change the oil.
How to change oil
Before starting work, drive around the block or let the vehicle run briefly. This dilutes the oil and later, along with the accumulated dirt, flows off much better. The drip pan in which you drain the old oil is also very important. You carry out the oil change in a garage so that no used oil can seep into the ground. This would be a violation of the environmental protection law and will be punished accordingly.
To drain the old oil, first open the oil filler cap and then the oil drain plug.
Then unscrew the old oil filter and free the sealing surface from the accumulated dirt.
Then insert the new oil filter and the sealing ring. Grease the sealing ring a little with oil beforehand so that it will hold better later. Then tighten the oil drain screw again.
Finally, fill in the new oil according to the specifications for your car. After driving a short distance, check the oil level again after a few minutes and add more oil if necessary. The car should be as level as possible during the inspection.
You can dispose of your old oil from the seller from whom you also bought the new oil – so be sure to keep the receipt. Alternatively there are corresponding collection points where you can get rid of it.
