The vehicle is a 1994 GMC Sierra 1500 with a TBI 350 (5.7L V8) and uses R134a refrigerant. When I recharge the system, it leaks from the back of the compressor over time. I don't want to spend the +$100 for a new compressor unless there is no other option. Can it be fixed or should I just spend the money?

It can be fixed, but it’s cheaper to replace it.

How did you determine the compressor is leaking? That's an unusual failure mode. I have seen blowouts due to a blockage in the high pressure side of the system.

I can physically see the refrigerant leaking from the compressor when the AC is on and the engine running. It's hard for me to explain, but the seal between the metal shroud and the rear of the compressor has broken and leaks refrigerant.

If you can find a parts kit, shoot why not? Rebuilds are usually for classics that dont have readily available remans though.

I'll see if I can find one. They made a million of these trucks and a million of these engines so there's gotta be something out there. With summer coming soon I just want some AC, rolling down my windows gets annoying after a few weeks and it sucks on the highway or in rain.
