Grinding Noise in Lower Gears (1st to 2nd):

Synchronizer Issues: Grinding or clunking noises during gear changes, especially in lower gears, can be a sign of synchronizer problems. The synchronizer is responsible for matching the speed of the gears during shifts.

Worn Clutch: A worn-out clutch can also produce grinding noises when shifting. If the clutch isn't disengaging properly, it can cause gear clash.

Whining or Whirring Noise:

Gear Wear: Whining or whirring noises could be a result of worn gears, bearings, or other internal components. Over time, gears can wear down or become damaged.

Low Transmission Fluid: Low or contaminated transmission fluid can also lead to unusual noises in the gearbox.

Rattling Noise:

Loose Components: Loose or damaged gearbox components or mounting bolts can produce rattling sounds.

Exhaust Heat Shields: Sometimes, a rattling noise may be caused by loose or damaged exhaust heat shields.

If your Passat is still under warranty, be sure to contact your local Volkswagen dealership.
