Nissan Rogue won’t start – causes and how to fix it

Your Nissan Rogue won’t start? Hardly anything is more annoying when your vehicle doesn’t start. This is especially true for working people who are absolutely dependent on their vehicle.

The reasons for the car no longer starting can be determined quickly using a systematic approach. If you know the most important tips, you can in many cases get your car ready for use again with just a few measures.

There are many causes for a car that does not start. The most important are:

  • Empty car battery
  • Empty tank
  • Broken ignition lock
  • Damaged fuel system
  • Damaged starter
  • Marten bite
  • Engine failure
  • Broken ignition coil
  • Moisture in the engine
  • Foreign matter in the fuel filter
  • Damaged alternator

You can often find a remedy yourself, for example with a jump start cable. In some cases, however, a visit to the auto repair shop is essential.

Why is my car battery discharging?

One of the most common reasons for a broken car is a dead battery. Various factors can cause the battery to drain on its own over time. In winter, sub-zero temperatures can mean that the battery is quickly drained of energy. It is to be expected in the early morning, especially during the cold season, that the car will no longer start because the battery is flat.

Do you notice that the starter barely turns or that there are power fluctuations inside the car? These are typical signs of a dead car battery, for example. The actual charge level of the battery can be checked with a voltmeter. Ideally, a spare battery or jump start cable should be available. Otherwise, only charging the car battery will help and you will have to wait until the charging process is complete.

What should I do if the starter is defective?

Your car won’t start and you don’t know what the problem is? One possible reason: The starter could be defective. The starter takes power from the battery to start the engine. Damage to the starter is possible if an old component is badly worn or if there is a material defect.

Starter

A damaged starter can be recognized by a clicking sound. If the vehicle has a manual gearbox, it can often be started again by pushing it without a starter, but the Nissan Rogue doesn’t come with manual gearbox, so you’re out of luck here. Unfortunately, you cannot repair the starter yourself. The way here leads to the nearest garage. The component is completely replaced there.

What should you watch out for with an empty tank?

The engine cannot be started with an empty tank. Often the engine starts again for a short moment and then suddenly stops again. This is due to the fuel residues that are still in the tank and are gradually being used up. While you don’t have to do anything with a gasoline engine other than refuel, with diesel vehicles, venting is also important. You can do this manually. New vehicles, on the other hand, perform this task automatically using the on-board diagnosis. So start the on-board diagnosis and let the bleeding process run.

What should I do if the ignition lock is broken?

An ignition lock is no longer installed in many modern vehicles. Instead, the car is put into operation via a start button. If your vehicle has an ignition lock, there is another possible cause for the car not to start. If the ignition lock is defective, nothing happens when you turn the key. This does not necessarily have to be caused by the ignition lock itself, because the chip in the key could also be damaged. If the problem is with the immobilizer and not the ignition lock, the engine should start at least for a short time.

In this case, a repair is unfortunately not easily possible. You should go to a workshop and have the ignition lock replaced with a working component. If the bowl is defective, you must request a new one from the manufacturer.

What problems can I experience with the fuel system?

Your car won’t start? Not only a lack of fuel or an empty tank prevents the engine from starting. The fuel system itself can also be affected. Typical is here as a failed injection or a damaged fuel pump. With these causes, the fuel no longer gets into the combustion chamber. Often the pump and the injection system are not broken, but incorrectly adjusted. It is also possible that the fuel lines are blocked or foreign objects have accumulated in the fuel filter.

The same applies here: Do not carry out repairs yourself. The replacement of the components must be in the workshop take place. The fuel pump should be changed after about 5,000 to 10,000 operating hours.

What effects can damaged spark plugs have?

Without functioning spark plugs, the engine will not start. The spark plugs themselves are often not affected by a defect. Instead, plug connections on the ignition system have come loose. If only one plug is actually loose, you can fix the problem yourself on site. If a spark plug has failed, it must be replaced in the workshop. The breakdown service can also help here.

What should I do if I get a marten bite?

Marten damage can be another reason why the car won’t start. The animals crawl under the vehicle and bite through cables and wires. In principle, this can affect all vehicle systems such as the fuel supply, the oil supply or the power supply.

The marten damage can usually be seen quickly by looking into the engine compartment. The damage caused by the marten bite can be repaired in the workshop. Be prepared for relatively high costs here.

How can I quickly find out the causes?

Go through the following checklist by to determine the cause of the non-starting vehicle faster:

My vehicle broke down while driving:

  • Is the gas running out?
  • Has engine failure occurred?
  • Has the ignition contacts been damaged?

My vehicle won’t start after standing for a long time:

  • Can you see loose ignition cables in the engine compartment?
  • Did you fill up the tank?
  • Will pushing fix the problem? Check the ignition contacts if this doesn’t work.
  • Is the alternator working?

Once you have found the cause of the defect, you should obtain offers in your area for the corresponding repair.
