Volkswagen takes measures to protect employees

Health comes before speed when restarting Volkswagen production. For this reason, management and the general works council have now laid down clear rules and measures to protect employees in a company agreement.

Volkswagen Human Resources Director Gunnar Kilian: “We take extensive precautions so that our employees can work safely. We also appeal to everyone: keep discipline over Easter, keep your distance, stay at home, and help keep Corona under control! For Volkswagen, one thing is certain: We are fully supporting the federal and state governments in their efforts against Corona. ”So far as the restart is concerned, it has been clear so far that few parts of component production will expand their already operating part operations from Tuesday after Easter, to secure the supply of the Chinese plants. This affects a total of 1,700 employees at the component locations in Braunschweig, Kassel and Salzgitter as well as Chemnitz and Hannover Component. They will be informed by their superiors. In addition, production is suspended both in the other areas of the component and in the vehicle manufacturing plants. Further concretizations of the driving styles are expected after Easter. The aim of the new company agreement is to take corona protective measures at an early stage to avoid infections. Processes in production are optimized, and consistent minimum clearances and increased hygiene standards apply in all areas. Where distances of 1.5 meters are not possible, all employees receive suitable protective equipment. 700 employees at the component locations in Braunschweig, Kassel and Salzgitter as well as Chemnitz and Hannover Component. Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Operation Officer of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, says: “The protection and health of our employees are a priority. Nothing is more important to us. Our workforce can be sure that we are doing the best that they can to work safely. That is why, together with the general works council, we set clear standards and laid down a timetable for the various phases of the ramp-up. “

The chairman of the general works council, Bernd Osterloh, emphasized: “Before we started short-time work, we provided a reliable timetable and thus certainty when and how we would shut down production. The same reliability now applies to the restart: health, predictability and communication always have priority for the employees. When in doubt, we prefer to produce one vehicle less than to take a risk somewhere. Our colleagues want to go back to work. We have now set the right framework for this with the new rules. “

The restart is accompanied by an extensive catalog of measures that divides the start-up into several phases. In phase 1, the precautions are the most comprehensive and will gradually be reduced to phase 4 in normal operation. The transitions determine the company and the works council together.

The catalog of measures includes specific distance and hygiene rules, duty to protect mouth and nose in areas where distances of 1.5 meters are not possible, coordinated cleaning intervals, decoupling of layers to avoid contacts, and the request for independent temperature measurement before daily Starting work. In total, the changes for optimized processes encompass more than 90 subject areas.

The focus is on manufacturing. For this purpose, teams of experts have adapted processes in close coordination with the works council and have partially regulated them from scratch. In phase 1, production will run slower than usual. In addition to changed processes that require more time, the timing of the work content is optimized so that distance is kept and contacts are minimized.

For the office areas, adjustments that have already proven themselves are effective, for example in technical development. For example, the flextime frame can be expanded if necessary to facilitate time intervals in the indirect areas. For the same reason, mobile work should be performed from home as much as possible until further notice.

All regulations also apply to the employees of external partners and service providers.
