Volkswagen sales slump by a third in May 2020

The effects of the corona crisis continue to affect the car manufacturer in Wolfsburg in May. However, the decline is less than in the previous month.

Volkswagen sold significantly fewer vehicles worldwide due to the corona crisis. However, the decline in May, at 33.7 percent to 609,400 cars, was less pronounced than in the previous month. In April, deliveries had slumped 45 percent because production and sale in Europe had stopped and trade to protect against the virus had not opened.

In May, 147,400 vehicles in Western Europe delivered 57 percent fewer customers than in the previous year, according to the group figures published on Friday. Deliveries in North America fell 39 percent.

In contrast, sales in China, which is recovering from the pandemic faster than expected, rose by 5.7 percent. Since the beginning of the year, the Wolfsburg-based company has hit almost 3.1 million vehicles worldwide, a decrease of 29.7 percent.

The coronavirus pandemic is affecting the automotive industry globally. Volkswagen , Daimler and BMW are therefore expecting red numbers for the current second quarter. Thousands of employees are on short-time work. Demand is weak due to fear of recession. Thousands of cars are produced in stockpiles or in the dealers’ yards. Industry representatives therefore expect that smaller companies in particular will not survive the crisis.
