Toyota Yaris Cross – a hybrid SUV built for the city

Based on the same platform as the new Yaris, the Toyota Yaris Cross introduces the brand to the small crossover segment. The model will be launched in mid-2021.

Toyota Yaris Cross

After launching the Toyota C-HR in the C-SUV segment four years ago, Toyota continues to go downmarket and unveils its first SUV in the B segment: the Yaris Cross.

Style wise, this Yaris Cross hybrid is reminiscent of a miniature version of the new Toyota RAV4 with its grille that is both imposing and sculpted. If the wheelbase is identical to that of the standard Yaris, the overall length gains 240 mm to maximize the interior space while the presence of tires in 18 inches makes it possible to increase the ground clearance by 30 mm.

Overall length: 4,180 mm
Overall width: 1,765 mm
Overall height: 1,560 mm
Wheelbase: 2,560 mm

GA-B platform

Incorporating the automaker’s new TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) architecture, the Yaris Cross is based on the same platform as the new version of the Yaris: the GA-B.

Driven by a fourth generation hybrid powertrain, the Yaris Cross is identical to the Yaris system. Composed of a three-cylinder petrol 1.5 liter Atkinson cycle coupled to an electric block, it develops up to 116 horsepower (85 kW). The difference is played out in the presence of two configurations: the first in simple traction and the second in all-wheel drive. Optional, the latter improves stability and motor skills on a daily basis. At the start and at acceleration, the torque is sent to the rear axle. Under normal conditions, only the front wheels are driven, but in the event of poor grip (wet paving stones, heavy rain), all-wheel drive starts automatically, explains the manufacturer’s press release.

At this stage, the manufacturer does not give any indication on the performance of its new hybrid SUV. Environmentally, the manufacturer estimates the level of CO2 emissions below 90 g/km for the two-wheel drive version and less than 100 g/km for the all-wheel drive version.

At this stage, the price of this new SUV has not been revealed.
