Toyota Fortuner AC clicking noise from passenger side dashboard

You’re driving on a quiet road in your Toyota Fortuner with the AC turned on, and you notice repeated single click noise from under the passenger side dashboard. What is it?

What causes this clicking noise?

If you hear a clicking noise coming from under the passenger side dashboard in your Toyota Fortuner, it most likely is the AC relay. The relay is responsible for turning the AC compressor on and off. Whenever the AC compressor turns on, you will hear a single click.

In most vehicles, the AC compressor relay is in the engine compartment fuse box, but in both Hilux and Fortuner, the relay is in the passenger compartment fuse box. Hence, the clicking noise in the cabin.

Is there a way to eliminate the clicking noise?

There isn’t much you can do about the AC relay clicking noise in the cabin of Toyota Fortuner. Sure you can try to insulate the fuse box to block out the noise, but in most cases it will minimize the noise and not eliminate it entirely.

What else can cause clicking noise in Toyota Fortuner cabin?

A faulty blend door actuator can also cause clicking noise in the cabin. The blend door actuator controls the direction and temperature of airflow in the cabin by opening and closing the blend door. If the actuator is faulty or worn out, it may produce a clicking noise as it struggles to operate properly. A qualified mechanic can diagnose and replace the faulty blend door actuator to restore proper HVAC operation.
