Volkswagen is a German automobile brand created in 1937 by Ferdinand Porsche, on the initiative of the German Labor Front led by Adolf Hitler. The Volkswagen brand belongs to the Volkswagen AG group,which in 2018 was the world’s leading vehicle manufacturer ahead of Toyota with 10.8 million units sold.
Volkswagen also owns the Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Ducati, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT and Škoda brands, as well as the truck manufacturer Scania and MAN.
Volkswagen means “people’s car” in German. The company’s international slogan was “Das Auto” (“The car”), although due to the emissions scandal it sought to change its slogan to something more humble and less pretentious, so in early 2016 the slogan was simply changed to “Then. Now. Always.”
Volkswagen has three cars on the list of 10 best-selling cars of all time, namely: Golf, Beetle and Passat. With these three cars, Volkswagen has produced more cars than any other manufacturer.
