Byton is a Chinese car manufacturer founded in 2018. The car manufacturer Byton (which means Byte on wheels) is based in Nanjing (China) and has design offices in Munich (Germany) and Santa Clara (United States). Byton has recruited big names in the automotive industry to form its team, including in particular Carsten Breitfeld, president of the brand, who designed the BMW i8, Benoît Jacob, former at BMW, Tom Wessner, former at Tesla and Faraday Future as well as David Twohig, the chief engineer of the Alpine A110 2. The Byton business is funded by Tencent Holdings, which specializes in internet and mobile services.
Byton made its first appearance by presenting 3 vehicles (gray, blue and red) of an electric SUV concept car, the “M-Byte”, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January 2018.
In April 2018, Byton unveiled its concept of “brand-store” in Milan, exhibiting in the largest European, American and Chinese cities. But Byton aims, like its compatriot Lynk & Co, to sell its vehicles mainly on the internet.
