The new Toyota Mirai can be ordered in Europe and U.S.: In the second Generation, the fuel cell sedan is more dynamic, powerful and safer than ever.
The new edition combines a sporty, more elegant design with safety and comfort: the interior now has five instead of four seats, which makes the four-door car more suitable for everyday use and families. In addition to the equipment-dependent three-zone automatic air conditioning, occupants benefit from an air purification system that filters even microscopic fine dust particles of particle size PM 2.5 out of the air. Because of their size, they are considered particularly dangerous.
Safety level expanded
Customers can choose from three equipment lines and seven different paint finishes. The basic version, which is available at prices from 63,900 euros (including 19 percent VAT), has numerous amenities, above all the latest generation of Toyota Safety Sense. The further expanded combination of various assistance systems supports the driver in everyday life and thus creates a close-knit safety network. The pre-collision emergency braking system now also includes, for example, steering assistance and an intersection assistant that protects against collisions with pedestrians and oncoming vehicles when turning.
The Lane Guidance Assistant warns if the Mirai threatens to deviate from the lane – visually, acoustically and also haptically by means of a vibrating steering wheel. If the driver does not react due to a medical emergency, for example, the “Driver Emergency” assistant parks the vehicle safely on the roadside. The radar-based cruise control not only keeps your distance and speed, but also reduces your own speed before entering bends and automatically increases it again when exiting bends. Other features include a high beam assistant and traffic sign recognition. In higher equipment lines, there are also a reversing assistant (RCTA-B), a blind spot assistant (BSM) and a parking assistant (ICS), which helps with parking.
Optimized fuel cell drive
The heart of the new Mirai, however, is a newly developed drive system: thanks to a third hydrogen tank and a more powerful, but more compact fuel cell, the range now climbs to up to 650 kilometers. This means that even longer distances can be covered almost silently without CO2 and pollutant emissions. The stored hydrogen is converted into electrical energy in the vehicle, which drives the electric motor, which is boosted to 130 kW / 182 PS.
While the fuel cell was placed at the front under the bonnet, the electric unit and drive battery are located at the rear. As a result, Toyota achieves an optimal weight distribution of 50:50 between the front and rear axles. In conjunction with the GA-L platform from Toyota Global New Architecture (TNGA), driving pleasure is guaranteed: The base, designed from the start for vehicles with rear-wheel drive and different types of drive, lowers the center of gravity and increases the body rigidity. The more direct and uniform response provides additional comfort and more agility.
