How to put Ram 1500 in neutral or tow mode without starting the engine

If you need to move your Ram 1500 without starting the engine, e.g. for towing, putting it in neutral is the best option. However, shifting to neutral can be a bit tricky if you’re not familiar with the process.

This guide is designed to help you safely and easily shift your Ram 1500 truck into neutral, whether you need to move it in your driveway or tow it behind another vehicle.

To put your Ram 1500 in neutral or tow mode without starting the engine, you need to access the panel located on the left side of the steering wheel.

Once you’ve opened the panel, you should look for a release lever that has a red strap attached to it.

Carefully pull this lever out until you hear a clicking sound, which indicates that your truck has been shifted into neutral. By doing so, you can now safely tow your Ram 1500 without turning on the engine.
