How to play music on Toyota RAV4 from USB flash drive

Toyota RAV4 comes equipped with one or more USB ports next to the aux port low in the center console.

Make sure your flash drive is formatted with either FAT32 or exFAT file system, as the RAV4 system may not recognize NTFS or any other file system.

  1. To play MP3 or windows media audio files from a flash drive, plug it directly into the USB port.
  2. The USB icon will become active on the display screen, and if the audio system is on, the files on the drive will start to play.
  3. If the information is available, the title and or artist will appear on the screen.
  4. You can search the flash drive by folder or by music selection.
  5. Touch the Files button to see the songs in the folder that’s open. If you want another folder, touch the Folders button.

Not a good system. Is there a way to plug flash drive in and just have it play song after song without taking your eyes off road to choose another song?

If your music is in a single folder then it should auto play all the files. Also, if you have 2019 or later model, you can just use CarPlay or Android Auto to play your music.

This was helpful to me. I have a 2019 Tacoma. I had songs on flash drive and was working great. I decided to put more music files on drive and suddenly the player said “nonplayable file”. I found this article. Formatted flash drive on computer and it removed all my music files. I changed it to exFAT some 32FAT wasn’t available. Copied and pasted music files from computer to flash drive and it works perfectly now.

I cannot get the USB 1 or 2 buttons to accept any of my flashdrives with music on my 2021 RAV4.

Had the same problem. Found out it needed to formatted to FAT32 and had to be 32GB or less. I was told that FATex will also work, but haven’t tried it.

The issue I’m experiencing is I formatted my 512gb stick to fat32 and added around 300gb of music all in individual file albums, the RAV stereo will automatically play the first track and move to the next but when I try to browse the folders it constantly says collecting file and track information this is still the same after an hour or so the same thing is happening with my 128gb stick too.

I read on forums where people say they have over 5000 tracks on a stick and it reads it fine and almost instantly . I’d be grateful if you have insight in how to set up a stick to do this.
