How to perform an emergency start on Toyota Camry (2006-2013)

If your vehicle will not start, the procedure mentioned in this guide can be used to start the engine provided the starting system and engine start/stop switch are functioning normally.

Note: This method is specific to XV40 models of Camry made from 2006 to 2013.


  1. Put the transmission in “Park“, set the ignition switch in accessory by pushing the engine start/stop switch once.
  2. Push and hold the engine start/stop switch for about 15 seconds while depressing the brake pedal firmly.
  3. Even if the engine starts using this procedure there could still be a malfunction. Have the engine checked by your Toyota dealer as soon as possible.
