How to open hood of BMW i3 with dead battery

The hood on the i3 can be open from both inside and outside the vehicle.

Using the key fob, press the hood open button for approximately one second, the hood will be unlocked and slightly raised.


To open the hood from inside, press the button in the drivers footwell.

To open the hood manually in case the battery is dead, remove the cover underneath the locking buttons.

Open this cover to access manual hood release cable

Then remove the wire cable and pull it back. The hood will unlock. Once at the hood, reach in and press the tab to release the locking mechanism, and open the hood.

it should be noted that if your i3 is locked, you won’t have access to the panel or will you be able to unlock the car. You will need to pop the cover off the door handle using the fob key. The fob key is inside your remote; press the black button on the back side and pull out the fob. Then, there is a small opening to insert they fob key from the bottom of the non-moving portion of the handle. Insert the key and lift towards you to pop off the cover. Then use the key to open the door and follow the above instructions.
