How to lock rear differential on Toyota FJ Cruiser

The locking rear differential is used when one or both of the rear wheels begin to spin in a ditch or on a slippery or rugged surface. This tutorial will show you how to turn it enable or disable it on Toyota FJ Cruiser.

Differentials equalize speed differences between the wheels of an axle or between front and rear wheels, as they occur in curves. In off-road or slippery conditions, individual wheels may spin while the others are stationary. In order to get ahead even in such situations, the differentials can each be provided with a differential lock. The differential lock creates a rigid connection between the wheels of an axle (front or rear differential lock) or between the front axle and rear axle (central differential lock) and thus prevents the wheels from spinning.

  1. To engage the locking rear differential, push the RR DIFF LOCK switch on the dashboard.
  2. For easy locking, push the lock switch and gently depress the accelerator pedal.
  3. To unlock the differential, push the switch again.

It is best to unlock the differential as soon as the vehicle has regained traction and is moving. For easy unlocking, turn the steering wheel in either direction while the vehicle is moving.
