How Battery Management System works on Ford F-150

Ford F-150 has a built-in battery management system that allows many electronic accessories to be used while the engine is off. It helps preserve battery power so your F-150 starts when you need it to.

When you turn off the engine, some accessories stay on. Courtesy lamps and headlamps for 10 minutes, Chimes for 30 minutes, and power points and USB ports for a maximum of 75 minutes. After the designated time, the battery management system turns them off, although, they may turn off sooner if the system detects low battery voltage.

If you turn on the radio without starting the engine, it should stay on for 60 minutes. If the battery management system detects low battery voltage, it will turn off the radio. Before that happens, this message will appear on the touchscreen: “System Off to Save Battery: Please turn ignition off or start engine.”

With the ignition on and the engine off, the battery management system will turn off the ignition after a maximum of 45 minutes or when the system detects the battery is running low. 60 seconds before the vehicle shuts off, this message appears in the instrument cluster: “Turn Power Off to Save Battery.”

If the battery management system detects low battery voltage while the engine is running, then certain non-critical features may be temporarily disabled to help the battery charge more quickly. These may include the heated rear window, heated seats, climate control, and heated steering wheel.
