After the Cabriolet variant of the new Fiat 500 “la Prima” presented in Milan in March, the purely electric Fiat 500 can now also be reserved as a limousine, again as a special “la Prima” model. The new Fiat 500 cleverly combines the electrical and sustainable soul of the brand icon with the distinctive design and attention to detail that is typical of the best products “Made in Italy”.

With even softer and more rounded lines than the previous generation, the new Fiat 500 “la Prima” retains the famous carefree feeling of “Cinquecento”, as the model is called in Italy. The new Fiat 500 also meets the increasing complexity – and the occasional restrictions – of driving in the city with a happy smile. At a time when mobility needs to be more sustainable, connected and autonomous, the third generation of the Fiat 500 also brings a lot of design and driving pleasure. The new Fiat 500 is not just a revolution, it revives an attitude that inspires renewal. As in the 1950s and 1960s, when the first generation of the “Cinquecento” made it possible for a whole generation to move around individually,

The new Fiat 500 “la Prima” is available as a hardtop from 34,900 euros.

The new Fiat 500 “la Prima” – the standard equipment

The new special model Fiat 500 “la Prima” is equipped as standard with a panoramic glass roof, which as a true window to the sky floods the passenger compartment with light and thus increases comfort and well-being on board. A newly designed roof spoiler on the upper edge of the tailgate improves aerodynamic efficiency. There is a choice of three exclusive paints that are inspired by nature: Ocean green (metallic) is reminiscent of the sea, mineral gray (metallic) stands for the earth and the three-layer paint sky blue symbolizes the sky. The Fiat 500 “la Prima” is also available in black onyx. Standard equipment also includes full LED headlights, 17-inch light-alloy wheels with a diamond finish, chrome-plated inserts in the side protection strips, seat covers and trim on the dashboard made of eco-leather.

The new Fiat 500 “la Prima” – the design

The silhouette of the new Fiat 500 is just as iconic as the interior, which has been further developed for the third generation of the series. The overall look has become even more dynamic and distinctive. The body contributes to the improvement of aerodynamic efficiency and range, among other things through the redesigned roof spoiler on the rear roof edge.

The more strongly shaped tailgate underlines the visual presence of the new Fiat 500. Clear and curved lines of the body make the vehicle even more elegant and sculptural. The new Fiat brand logo can be seen above the rear number plate. The horizontal lines of the rear emphasize the width of the vehicle.

Optimal solutions for range, charging and driving

Range and charging times are the two most important features that electric vehicle buyers pay attention to. The new Fiat 500 “la Prima” has lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 42 kWh on board, which enable a distance of up to 320 kilometers according to the WLTP standard (World Wide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure).

To optimize the charging time, the new Fiat 500 “la Prima” is equipped with a quick charging system that allows a charging current of up to 85 kW. With fast charging (DC charging with Mode 4 cable), after just five minutes of charging, the batteries are charged enough to cover a distance of around 50 kilometers – more than the average daily requirement. In this mode, the battery is also 80 percent charged in just 35 minutes. The new Fiat 500 is equipped with a so-called CCS2 connection (Combo 2) on the rear right side wall, which allows charging with both direct and alternating current. The intelligent control enables programmable charging and gives feedback on the charging status of the vehicle.

At the launch of its first electric vehicle, Fiat also offers innovative solutions for home charging stations. For the special model Fiat 500 “la Prima”, an Easy Wallbox is available, which is connected to a conventional 230 volt socket. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) developed this technology together with ENGIE EPS, a leading specialist in energy storage systems and microgrids. The Easy Wallbox is marketed in Europe by Mopar. In the basic configuration, the Easy Wallbox enables charging the batteries of the Fiat 500 with up to 2.3 kW. In addition, the new Fiat 500 “la Prima” has a Mode 3 cable as standard, which enables charging at public stations with up to 11 kW.

The new Fiat 500 provides three driving modes: Normal, Range and Sherpa. In Sherpa mode, named after the legendary mountain guides in the Himalayas, the entire system is configured to achieve the greatest possible range. The Sherpa mode limits the maximum driving speed to 80 km / h, commands from the accelerator pedal are implemented particularly efficiently, and consumers such as air conditioning or seat heating are automatically switched off. Of course, these can be reactivated at any time if necessary. As far as possible, the Sherpa mode ensures that, for example, a destination programmed in the navigation system or the nearest charging station can be reached.

In normal mode, the new Fiat 500 can be driven almost like a conventional vehicle with an internal combustion engine. If the drive program selector switch is in range, with a little practice it is possible to control the new Fiat 500 only with the accelerator pedal. In so-called “one-pedal driving”, releasing the accelerator pedal initiates a braking process without the brake pedal also having to be depressed. The brake pedal is practically only required to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. The Range mode simultaneously optimizes the recovery of energy when braking (recuperation), which in turn increases the range.

The electric drive of the new Fiat 500 has an output of 87 kW (comparable to 118 hp). The top speed is limited to 150 km/h. The vehicle accelerates from standstill to 50 km/h in 3.1 seconds, 100 km/h is reached after 9.0 seconds.

Level 2 autonomous driving and connectivity

Striking, exclusive and always connected to the Internet – the new Fiat 500 “la Prima” is a high-tech vehicle. Standard equipment includes the autonomous emergency brake assistant with pedestrian and cyclist recognition, a high-resolution rear-view camera, light sensor and high-beam assistant, automatic emergency call (eCall) and the electric parking brake. Thanks to numerous electronic driver assistance systems (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems ADAS), the new Fiat 500 “la Prima” masters level 2 autonomous driving.

The on-board systems include cameras that monitor the area around the longitudinal and transverse axes of the vehicle. The intelligent adaptive cruise control (intelligent adaptive cruise control iACC) reacts with braking or acceleration not only taking other vehicles into account, but also by cyclists and pedestrians. Lane Centering keeps the new Fiat 500 “la Prima” in the middle of the lane, provided that it is precisely defined by lines.

The intelligent speed assistant recognizes signs for speed limits and prompts you to comply with them. The further developed Blind Spot Assist (Urban Blind Spot) uses ultrasonic sensors to detect objects in the so-called blind spot of the exterior mirrors and activates a corresponding warning signal in the form of a triangle on the mirror surfaces. The Attention Assist detects lack of concentration in the driver and recommends a pause by activating a corresponding symbol. In addition, the new Fiat 500 “la Prima” is equipped with “360 ° Drone-View”, a 360-degree camera system that, for example, creates a picture during parking maneuvers as if a drone were hovering over the vehicle.

The special model Fiat 500 “la Prima” offers as standard a seven inch (17.8 centimeter) TFT monitor as the central instrument as well as the Uconnect 5 infotainment system with a screen size of 10.25 inch (26 centimeter) and integrated navigation system. The system enables the convenient integration of smartphones, is compatible with Apple Car Play and Android Auto and enables access to Internet-based services from Uconnect Services via the Telematic Box module.

The new Fiat 500 is the first vehicle model from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to be equipped with the fifth generation Uconnect infotainment system. Uconnect 5 is the platform designed for the future. Developed by FCA and based on the almost unlimited customizable operating system Android Automotive, Uconnect 5 creates a completely new user experience. For example, so-called widgets can be used to freely design functions and applications. Uconnect 5 is controlled via a high-resolution touchscreen with a screen size of 10.25 inches (26 centimeters) in 16: 9 format, which is perfectly integrated into the dashboard of the new Fiat 500. The controls have been designed to avoid distractions while driving.

In combination with the Telematic Box module, Uconnect 5 offers the following innovative connectivity functions in addition to the mandatory automatic emergency call (eCall):

My: Assistant: Establishes contact with a service center, for example to request a breakdown service or to get help with other problems. The owner also receives a monthly status report on his vehicle by email.
My: Remote: Allows you to query the state of charge of the battery and control charging functions via your smartphone, for example to use periods with particularly inexpensive electricity tariffs. In addition, this function allows you to locate the vehicle, lock or unlock the doors, switch the lights on or off, program the air conditioning and send alarm messages as soon as the vehicle leaves a defined area or exceeds a certain speed.
My: Car: Provides information on the most important operating conditions of the vehicle, for example the battery charge level, tire pressure or mileage also reminds of inspection dates.
My: Navigation: Not only can an externally created route description be sent to the vehicle’s navigation system via this application, but information about the weather and traffic situation is also displayed. The information also includes charging stations along the route, the system takes into account the current state of charge of the vehicle battery. The underlying map data is automatically updated online.
My: eCharge: Manages charging processes, be it at public charging stations that can also be booked and paid for via My: eCharge, or via the wallbox at home.
My: Wi-Fi: Builds a mobile hotspot in the vehicle, via which up to eight end devices can use the Internet in 4G standard. It also allows voice commands to be entered through the voice recognition system, which is based on Amazon Alexa technology.
My: Theft Assistance: In the event of unauthorized access, the vehicle owner will be informed immediately. As soon as the theft has been officially confirmed, the service center will help you find the vehicle again.

The Fiat 500 attaches great importance to connectivity. It communicates with its owner on board and outside the vehicle. For example, programming of the navigation system and temperature control of the interior are possible even before starting the journey. The new Fiat 500 establishes a connection to the driver’s smartphone in around five seconds; no cable is required to charge the smartphone.

The Uconnect 5 infotainment system with a 10.25-inch monitor and integrated navigation system also offers a module for advanced voice control (Natural Language), which can be used to operate the air conditioning and radio, among other things, with verbal input commands.
