Driver steals a traffic camera to avoid paying fine in Russia

The driver from Astrakhan came up with an unusual way to avoid a fine – he stole a traffic camera, which more than once “caught” him on traffic violations.

However, the disappearance was quickly noticed by the company servicing the device. One of the representative reported the theft to law enforcement. The cost of the stolen camera was estimated at about 180,000 rubles (about $ 2500 at the current rate). The police said that the incident occurred on a section of the Astrakhan-Kamyzyak road. The driver removed a radar speed camera, as well as a battery and an infrared spotlight.


The thief was soon found – recordings from the camera, which were stored in a cloud, helped in the search. Locals helped in identifying the culprit. It turned out to be the 26-year-old driver of a Lada. The man admitted to abducting the camera. On the fact of theft, a criminal case was brought against him.
