Citroën C5 Aircross plug-in Hybrid posponed, will get a 4×4 version

Scheduled for June, the launch of the Citroën C5 Aircross plug-in hybrid has been postponed until September. In parallel, the manufacturer is preparing a 4×4 version of 300 hp which shares its architecture with the DS7 Crossback E-Tense and Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4.

Marketed since January 2019, the family SUV has found its place in a market where competition is heightened. The range will be enriched this year with a plug-in hybrid version (from €39,950), initially scheduled just before summer, but whose release is expected to slip in September. The C5 Aircross Hybrid develops 225 hp by combining the 1.6 PureTech 180 hp engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission including a 110 hp electric motor.

During the presentation in Shanghai in April 2017, Citroën mentioned the preparation of a PHEV 4×4 version of 300 hp. Three years later, it materializes – as shown by this “spy photo” taken in China and on which we notice the PHEV 4WD logo. Its based on the architecture of the DS7 Crossback E-Tense, Opel Grandland X Hybrid4 and Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4, namely the 1.6 PureTech 200 hp engine associated with the electrified e-EAT8 box (110 hp) and an electric motor. 110 hp installed on the rear axle. The latter transforms the French SUV into a 4×4. For reasons of positioning within the PSA group, Citroën has made the wise choice not to sell this version in Europe.
