Charging the car battery: how long does it take?

If your car no longer starts, you have to charge the car battery manually. We will show you how long it takes to load and what you need to watch out for.

If the car battery is empty, you can have another car help you get started. If the engine then runs for around 30 minutes, in many cases the battery is recharged sufficiently.

Alternatively, you can fully charge the car battery with a charger. Depending on the size of the battery and the performance of the charger, the process can take several hours.

In this example, the car battery has a capacity of 44 Ah and the charger delivers a charging current of 1.5 A (1500mA). These values can usually be read on the respective devices.

Simply divide the capacity of the battery by the charging current, in this case 44 by 1.5. This results in a charging time of around 30 hours. Due to the heat loss, you have to multiply the result again by 1.2 to 1.5. The amount of heat loss depends on the charger.
