Azerbaijan, Singapore and Japan drop out of 2020 F1 championship

The idea of having a tournament of between 15 and 18 races remains the same.

The organizers of Formula 1 announced the cancellation of the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan, Singapore and Japan due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, they affirm that it is still possible to have a 2020 season of between 15 and 18 races.

“These decisions (to cancel the three races) were made due to the different challenges that our promoters are facing in these countries,” they explained from the category.

“In Singapore and Azerbaijan the deadlines necessary for the construction of urban circuits make it impossible to organize these events in a period of uncertainty, and in Japan, current travel restrictions have also led to the decision not to hold the race” was added.

These cancellations are in addition to those of the GPs of Monaco, France and the Netherlands, which lost their thumb several weeks ago. However, the championship promoter still believes in the project of having 15-18 races by the end of the season in Abu Dhabi in mid-December. In this context, he assured that he hopes to “publish the final calendar before the start of the season in Austria.”

The 2020 tournament, which was to start in mid-March in Australia, will start on July 5 at the Austrian Red Bull Ring. There it will be presented again the following week. Subsequently, seven races will be held in Europe between July and September. All of them will be behind closed doors, with reduced personnel in the paddock and following a strict sanitary protocol.

After the European tour of the World Cup, the continuation should take teams and drivers to Asia and America, before ending in the Middle East.

“We have made significant progress on the revised schedule with current promoters as well as new ones,” added the press release. The latter is directly related to the negotiations that take place with different circuits such as the Italians of Mugello and Imola, Portimao in Portugal and Hockenheim in Germany.
