I've been driving Mercedes for a long time and I've also driven Opel (Omega) - very reliable cars.

But my BMW 728i was pretty disastrous, I just couldn't rely on it. Well, he was no longer the youngest, but he always had problems. It was simply not reliable, you did not know whether you would arrive and a car for the way to work and everyday life had to be reliable!

I heard from a friend I told yesterday that these are all typical defects of older BMWs and that the quality of the BMWs is not as good as that of older Mercedes and that the B-Omega that I had was more reliable. Then I remembered the early 1998 318i E46 from a previous neighbor, who had always caused trouble and had similar problems to my E38 - and my great-uncle's E39 was good in terms of engine / gearbox, but had some minor problems in the area of electronics / electrics and cooling system - like mine and others.

Is there anything to it - should older BMWs be avoided or are older Mercedes and Opels neither better nor worse? Of course it depends on the car and its condition - but I have to say that I simply had a lot more confidence with Mercedes and Opel, even though I approached the E38 without prejudice.

Please no fanboy answers and no insults to brands and holders, but really only factual reports and experiences - thank you!
