I just bought a 2004 Lexus RX 330 with 181k miles. The belt was last changed at 96k. It currently runs like a dream.

When should I replace the timing belt?

Timing Belt every 90k miles so within the next 5k miles at the absolute latest.Preferably yesterday. Get a full kit that includes belt, tensioner, water pump, and the 2 bearings. Change the coolant also (as you're draining most of the coolant out of the block anyway). Takes Toyota Pink/Aisin ACT002

Also the kit you'll want is: AISIN TKT026

parts can be found on RockAuto.com

Source: I'm a Toyota dealership technician. Please keep to the interval on this critical engine part.

So how much will it cost me to change the whole kit at Toyota?

According to my research (I 5-second internet search) you should have already changed it. "Runs like a dream" is not always relative to belt condition.

Wrong. The suggested replacement is 90k miles. Based on actual research, many say 120k is fine. Try to be helpful next time or keep comments to yourself.

If you already knew the answer (and want to be some kind of jackass about it) then why are you here? Not everyone has great luck with timing belts, so it's a gamble after 90k. Good luck.

I’m not looking for what I can read in my owners manual or a “five second internet search”, I’m here for people with actual experience and knowledge that I don’t have.

You're not going to find that by asking when you should perform a service, we're only going to tell you what is recommended, usually by the manufacturer. If you want in-depth advice, ask specific questions about what to do when you're elbow-deep in the car and need to know how to get past something that's hanging you up.

A timing belt is not something you want to run to the last mile. Around here they are generally recommended every 100,000km’s which is approximately 60k miles. Trying to wring it out is a poor idea if you understand what happens when they let go.
