I was driving my moms 2005 pt cruiser. I recently got a new car. I told her that I would fix the car for her since she let me drive it for two years. It needs a catalytic converter & an oil gasket. I got both parts on eBay for less than $150. I think I spent $144. What can I expect for average labor?

NOTE: I know it’s an old car and not worth fixing, but it’s my moms car and I need to fix it for her.

I think you should have looked for a shop first. Many shops will not touch putting your knockoff parts on, the chances of a sub 150 dollar cat lasting long are slim and they aren't going to want someone coming back wanting 'warranty work' done when they made no money on the job the first time.

Look into doing it yourself if you are set on using your own parts or make an arrangement ahead of time with an independent shop.

The mechanic that we go to is really good on letting us buy our own parts. He does tell us though “if you buy your own parts, you might be rolling the dice with how long they’ll last.” Which at least he’s honest. My mom doesn’t drive it very often, she’s going to use it as a winter car. If she was taking it cross country, then I’d have the mechanic order the parts.

If you have an understanding with the mechanic you go to I would suggest calling that shop then and asking them...

Labor rates vary wildly as it is depending on location and some places are going to adjust labor rates further to account for lack of parts markup to let them keep the lights in the shop on. Rust also plays a factor in what it's going to cost as it takes much longer to get rusty parts apart than something from say a southern car and many times if the vehicle is rusty some parts might break/need replaced as well during the repair making it even harder to give a decent estimate without more information.
