We have a 2015 Civic EX with a CVT transmission. Shifting into sport gear raises the RPMs to about 3-4 thousand on downhill slopes. It definitely helps assist with maintaining speed and braking down mountain slopes but is this a safe method to use for our car or could it cause early wear or damage to the engine or CVT?

What’s cheaper? A transmission, or brake pads? Use that to determine which component you want to put more wear on.

OP, this is completely fine. Engine braking saves wear on your pads, and does no damage to your engine or transmission.

If it would damage it, they wouldn’t allow you to do it. Also, ignore the poster saying to use cruise control to manage speeds going downhill. Don’t rely on cruise control on hills!

This is called engine braking and is a very useful feature of manually shifted gearboxes. As long as you are careful to keep the revs mid-range and don't down-shift at too high speed your car and transmission will be fine.

Yes it can and you shouldn't do it. The POINT of a CVT is to constantly vary the gear ratios to achieve the best power, mpg, handling, etc. And unless you are driving on back roads with no pavement DON'T slow down going down hills! Just let off the accelerator pedal or better yet turn on the cruise control & let the car do it for you.
