I bought a used AFH engine (1.4 16V 74kW for Polo 6N1). The sticker on the timing belt cover is missing. Otherwise I have no information about the engine or the vehicle in which it was installed. The production date is 12/1996 on the oil separator and 12/1996 on the coolant pipe.

I trusted that the engine code and engine number are stamped on the flywheel side in the engine block. But to my surprise there are only numbers there, in two lines.

The first line contains "27" and below it a six-digit number. Unlike usual, these numbers are not stamped in the middle, but rather in the right side area.

Who can help me and give me information?

Perhaps it is a replacement engine?

I would be very grateful for your answers or tips :-)!

Check out the top of the block, 1st cylinder, where the oil channel goes up (and like a small oil puddle is), you will find it there.

Thanks for your tip, unfortunately I have not found anything.

Telephone inquiries at my local VW dealer, and in the classic department of VW did not help me.

I wonder what a workshop would do in this case if spare parts had to be ordered.

On the flywheel side it is actually on the top left, for the newer engines, however, the letters only consist of several "pinpricks" (1/10 grain point) and are quickly covered by rust. Clean carefully with oiled wet sandpaper.
