I intend to buy a 06 Subaru Forester XT or something similar for my daily driver. I live in Sacramento valley and spend a lot of time in the city/freeway but would like to be able to off-road for access (not sport).I have seen shocks with adjustable heights.

Not knowing anything about lifting- what are the types of lift systems and are there any that are electronically adjustable? IE "city mode v off road mode" for better aerodynamics and mileage in regular traffic but extra clearance in the mountains?

What are the other factors in installing a lifted system? axle length, wheel stick out, ball joints/knuckles, alignment etc~

I am decent with auto repairs and would likely be doing brakes and suspension on whatever vehicle I purchase, so I figure it might be a good time to install a suitable lift kit as well.

Thanks in advance :)

If you're serious that you're only using it to access, then an offroad airbag system will do what you want. They aren't cheap, but they do exactly what you're asking.

I've heard of those, thanks for the reminder! These temporarily increase ride-height with an air pump, right?
Any best system recommendations?

Yes, they pump air into bladders that are installed between the axles and frame, lifting the frame up to give you more clearance.

Sorry no, I have never actually used one, just seen a few here and there.
