My brakes were bad so I replaced them at my mechanic, but my brake and abs light are on together. My dashboard was replaced so idk if that is a problem but the light stays on sometimes when I start and is off sometimes when the car is restarted.

Does it take awhile for the brake warning light to go off after the brakes are replaced?

If not what can cause my brake light to be on?

Check you fluid level. Sometimes if there is too much the light will come on. This is especially true in cases where three is a long interval between servicing.

Check brake fluid level first too low light will come on and can also turn abs light on, if level is fine (possible for level sensor to be defective but very rarely), check that the abs wires are not disconnected or loose or visibly damaged if tight and look ok scan the abs for codes , could be a bad sensor , damaged internal wiring by hanging caliper incorrectly.
