I have the problem that the engine indicator light is on (half) and in the fault memory crankshaft exhaust camshaft reference. It can be seen that my vehicle makes strange noises at around 2000-2500 revolutions, it sounds like vibrations, when accelerating or at higher revs or lower you don't hear it. If I now descend a mountain in 3 gears and the noise comes all the time, the message comes within a few seconds. After that the noise is gone because it is probably in emergency operation. Do you have any idea what it could be? December 2016 the timing chain was changed by BMW. But I can hardly suspect that the chain is to blame because after the message the noise disappears and the chain is not simply switched off ?? . Do you have any idea what it could be?

The 2A99 is typical for elongated timing chains. Even if you have the chain made before, the problem can reappear. Unfortunately, many factors are crucial for a long lifespan with these chains.

Do you have a petrol engine? If the engine is hot and stopped, open the oil cap shortly after switching it off and see if the chain is tight. It has to be that way.

Otherwise I could possibly imagine stiff Vanos valves as the cause of the error but then you should actually have other Fs entries.

The chain is tight I can not pull it up, move it slightly to the right and left, but this is normal, so the chain not only stops at the top when I push to the right and left, but it hardly moves. I also read that the chain is actually steered when it is. At the entrance there is no problem at the exit.

The error message fits well with the vibrations, the engine has adjusted timing due to an elongated timing chain. Either the vehicle is relentlessly stepped into the rev limiter, only once is it enough to batter the chain like this, or there is deliberately no regular oil changes.

The timing chain is so delicate that any kind of stress and high speeds must be avoided, so only drive, but without fun!

I have the same problem. Recently my car has been buzzing within the first 500m after the cold start. Then the half-filled engine warning light comes on and the noise is suddenly gone. I could not find a drop in performance with the engine control lamp.

If I then turn the engine off and on again, the problem is gone. No light and no hum.

As I said, this only happens every now and then and only when the engine is cold. If the engine is still warm, everything is normal. The same 2A99 fault is in the fault memory.

I drive an E87 116i 2010 with N43b20 engine.

The timing chain was replaced by BMW exactly two years ago and is now around 45,000 kilometers away.
