Subaru Crosstrek says depress brake, push ignition to start but won't start

When I try to start the engine of my 2015 Subaru Crosstrek, it shows error: depress brake, then says push ignition to start, but does not start the engine.

Most probably a faulty brake sensor. You can override this requirement until you get the sensor replaced. To start the engine without pressing the brake: press the start button once, then press and hold the start button for 30 seconds.
