Where can I find the engine number on the BMW E36?

Where can you find the engine number on a BMW 320i Turing E36 from 1998? At least its not in the operating instructions.

The engine number is located on the lower edge of the crankcase, roughly level with the third cylinder on the left-hand side.

The identifiers such as "164E1" (M40 316i) or "184E2" (M43 318i) are stamped there.
